Class of 2014 Final Clocks

Sadly this is a short post, as we have just two students leaving us. We do, however, still have two excellent clocks to show!

First up is Andy's: a simple and classic single train clock with a recoil escapement. Everything was made completely by hand apart from the pinions, as that's the only thing we don't have the equipment for.
The plates have been skeletonised to allow a clear view of the train.

Andy's plates use 'English frosting' to give them their soft shine.
The pendulum bob, turned from a piece of solid brass.
A view of the train from the side:

Merlin has taken a slightly more adventurous approach to his clock, using a custom escapement with dual escape wheels, and an oversized 3600Hz balance in place of a pendulum.
Merlin also used the English finish on his plates, as it looks so nice! It's a real change from the mirror polish traditionally used.
The escapement features a helical 'hairspring' made from an old pocket watch mainspring, which has been reshaped and retempered for its new use.
Though not shown here, it's a weight-driven clock, and here is the barrel and click system used to wind it.

Merlin has written about his clock in much more detail on a personal blog, so if you're interested you can find it here.

I hope you like what you see here, and hope those of you that could came to see these clocks in person, to truly appreciate them. These projects have both turned out very well for both students, and have set an excellent example for us all to follow, and maybe even outdo!

  1. As a first year student in 14/15, I am slightly frightened by these pics but I have full confidence in my class and tutors after my first week of study. I am looking forward to sharing the pride of accomplishment these grads now have. Congratulations!
