London Hackspace

Over the summer I was introduced to the London Hackspace which resides in Hackney - quite appropriately I think. It's an amazing place where creative things happen and has a treasure trove of resources. I have visited the Brighton and Birmingham version in the past and knew that there was equipment for computer hacking and machines such as 3D printers however I was surprised to find that they had gadgets for all kinds of creative construction. It's a community affair and anyone can use the facilities so I recommend having a look and potentially becoming a member. It would be a great place to use in the holidays away from the college workshop.

Upstairs at the Hack space is the a quiet space where people are able to do computer work. There is also a library and classroom available and some very impressive 3D printers

Some past projects  from the 3D printers and knitting machine etc
Membership is a monthly payment which is based on what can be afforded. The recommended amount is £15 with a sizeable discount for unemployed/low paid, and students.

Downstairs is where I was attracted to: a large space with tools and materials for anyone to use. The Hackspace treats its members with trust and respect and so it is down to you to look after what is there and replenish the materials when they are low (if you can) however this means that you can also help yourself to it too.

The chester lathe

Milling machine

Electronic tools

A bike workshop

Grinder

Metal roller

Jigsaw

A space for wood working

And a space for metal working

Materials are for everyone except the ones that say 'Do not hack'!
Have a look or see if there's one in your area, they are amazing places.
