BHI Automatic Watches Course

Over the Easter break a number of students from second year visited the BHI for a week long (four days for us due to good Friday) course on automatic watches, which looks at both Swiss and Japanese movements. We had John Murphy as a tutor, a very knowledgeable watchmaker who was an excellent (and patient!) teacher! Here's a few photos from the course.

Andrew at the start of the week. Not quite sure what to do!

Using Essence of Renata to ensure the old oil is removed

John very sneakily adjusted the endshake of the centre wheel one lunch time while we were out of the workshop. We used a jewelling tool to correct it

Slowly, Andrew worked out how to use all the tools...

The BHI has a powerful microscope hooked up to a TV and a projector. This made it very easy for John to show us what he was doing, and helped us to see what was correct. Below you can see oiling of the pallets being checked. Bonus points if you can tell what the diagrams to the side are! (answers on a postcard)

Finally, after four days of work, Andrew had mastered the ETA 2836-2 and had learned many good techniques for servicing watches
Andrew's confident!
At the end of the week you get a certificate of attendance, here we are posing with John out the front of the BHI!
