Workshop Wednesday 05/02/2014

Welcome to the first of what will hopefully be a weekly post; Workshop Wednesday! Just an opportunity to see the various projects some of the students are working on. The day today started with the second years' weekly project meeting and a very exciting cake to go with coffee.

Alfie using a Bergeon lathe: he's currently making a barrel arbor for a Helbros 21 movement from scratch. The screw which holds the barrel wheel sheared off inside the original, and being a vintage calibre they aren't available to buy.
Rosie has been working on a smiths suspended balance clock belonging to a relative.

After bushing almost all the pivot holes, and replacing one of the balance pivots, she set about timing the movement. Not as easy as it seems! The train is 10800 bph, making it difficult for the timing machine to pick up. The collet to adjust beat is also in a very hard to reach place!

It looks worse than it is!
Meanwhile, Merlin has been working on a fusee clock. It's a bit of a mystery machine with an extra 'barrel' driven by the motion work. In this picture he's checking the drop on each tooth of the escape wheel, which weren't all equal.

Lastly, Thomas has been working very hard on his deadbeat technical drawing, getting ready for the deadline on Friday.

  1. Looking good. Have you tried using the Microset timer on the floating balance?

    1. I'm not too sure it's the timer's fault; the clock is just in need of putting in beat! I will give it a try though, thanks.
